Alot of people have been comparing [PROTOTYPE] to the PS3 exclusive InFamous.
It's not hard to see why - They're both 'open world' sandbox type games set in large cities (InFamous' city is fictional however whereas [PROTOTYPE] is set in Manhattan) and both feature supposedly 'average joe' type guys who suddenly find themselves with super human abilities after some sort of disaster.
So yes, they do sound pretty similiar. What's more, anybody who has watched trailers of the two can clearly see similiarities in gameplay.
However, these games are further apart than you may think. InFamous gives you a morality meter, not the best i've seen in a game but it does its job well enough. Killing civilians will push you towards the evil side of the bar, whereas healing them or helping them out will bring you back upto the good side. It's pretty straight forward.
[PROTOTYPE] doesn't give you any such option, you play as Alex Mercer, he's out for revenge and wants to discover why he woke up in a morgue with super powers and, putting it frankly, he doesn't give a shit who gets killed in the process.
Some may not like the missing gameplay elements the lack of a morality meter brings, others won't care too much and others probably won't even notice. For me personally it's a good thing, I do like morality choices, but I think two games within a couple of weeks that already have so many similiarities would just be too much for me to swallow, so it lets me kick back and slaughter hundreds upon hundreds of nameless, faceless citizens without having to worry if i'm gonna start growing horns all of a sudden
[PROTOTYPE] is a game that doesn't take itself too seriously, it gives you a fairly large city as your playground, more moves/abilities than I care to count and doesn't punish you for slicing up anyone that gets in your way. It's care free attitude really is quite refreshing when compared to the story heavy InFamous.
[PROTOTYPE] has been getting some stick off the press for it's visuals and i'd like to touch upon this. The game's visuals are pretty average I have to say, the city itself is rather bland but then most open world sandbox games suffer from this issue.
The animations however are fluid and impressive, scaling the sides of a skyscraper than jumping off and elbow dropping a tank is awesome and satisfying, and in moments like that it's easy to forget about some of the lesser visuals. Alex looks and feels natural whilst running around the city and the controls are okay, not up there with games like CoD4's control scheme, but they do the job well enough.
I'm only about an hour or so into the game so far, but [PROTOTYPE] sure is alot of fun, check back this weekend for Game-pad's full review of the game.
