After having sunk a few hours into Red Faction Guerilla I felt it was a good time to report back and tell you Game-Padders how I'm finding it. So far the game continues to impress me. The singleplayer map appears to be vast, although the world isn't as covered in cities and towns like many open world games - which is due to the fact the game is set on Mars. I'm currently in the second area of the map, with a couple of small ventures into the third, and so far the main missions have been consistantly interesting and varied. From bailing out other Red Faction members to getting in a car and driving through EDF Radars with them hot on your tail - the game continues to throw different style missions at you, rather than the cookie-cut open world go here kill that, go here collect that style missions, however its hard to tell yet whether this will continue.
One thing that the demo really cannot represent is the scale of the game. Both seen in the environments and destruction. For example, in the full game you will find absolutely huge towers which you can destroy from the bottom and watch them collapse and destroy everything in its wake. Whats also interesting is the fact these towers can be hollow, and I've had times where I'll set about destroying a tower only for it to fall up a hill-side allowing me to use it as a walkway up the hill.
Theres also a bunch of side missions where you help out other Red Faction members with their smaller tasks. However with the destruction even these end up turning into epic and interesting tasks. One of these side missions set me out to stop a convoy of EDF trucks, which just so happened to be pretty damn far away. I set off by grabbing the fastest vehicle I could find and speeding to intercept it. I then managed to get ahead of them and lay down some traps in their wake - which didn't go as planned. All hell broke loose but I managed to contain the threat, only to find that one truck had escaped. Just so happened this truck was on a lower road down the hill, so I jumped back into my vehicle and threw it off the cliff into the truck. A few satchel charges later and the mission was complete. This seems to highlight just how interesting even the side missions can end up being.
Also another cool concept is how they have added specific buildings which are of EDF Importance, and are beneficial for you to destroy. These vary in Medium Importance to the heavily defended High Importance. Believe me, these High Importance buildings really require some smart planning and attacking as they are genuinely tough. I'm yet to do one without dieing on my way out thanks to the sheer number of EDF troops that come in on full alert after taking down one of these buildings.
I've hopped onto multiplayer for a few matches too, and just like the demo it appears to be a ton of fun. There is 125 levels of badge icons, colours, player models, hammer models, match playlists and bonus XP Events to keep you busy - although its not going to hook you like CoD it definitely helps to give some reward for playing the game. If you had happened to have a look in the multiplayer demo tutorial videos you would have known that the full game features many more backpacks - the way RFG gives you a kind of powerup. Ranging from jetpack, to firepower, to speed, to healing - theres a lot of fun combinations to be had. One weapon which I havn't yet come across in singleplayer which I found in Multiplayer is the rifle which materialises anything it hits. It holds 6 shots per round and fires one at a time. At first glance it would just seem like a standard one shot rifle, however if you fire it at any form of construction you will see that upon impact it causes the area of the object to disintegrate - awesome.
So far my time with Red Faction Guerrilla is extremely positive and the game continues to surprise me. With the fantastic destruction and interesting elements I've been having some truly amazing moments - and these elements all appear to lend themselves to multiplayer in a fun and different way too.
