Xperia Play Set To Arrive In March

E-mail

Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play has been given a release window of Spring 2011. More specifically, the device which has been dubbed as the 'PlayStation Phone' will hit U.S shores in March as part of an exclusive partnership with U.S telecommunications giant Verizon. The phone is then expected to ship worldwide following its U.S launch. At this time no RRP has been announced and curiously it's been confirmed that the PlayStation Store service will not be available on the phone until the end of the year. A questionable move on Sony's part considering small downloadable titles from Sony's PS Store are surely one of the devices main attractions over competitors? What's more, people who have previously purchased games and/or content from the PS Store via other Sony consoles will have to re-purchase those games for the Xperia Play. That's not the end of the world and of course due to the devices limitations it will understandably only support specific titles, however once more this is a questionable move by Sony. Apparently the phone will however launch with a "Legendary PlayStation One title" but what title that is exactly we're still in the dark about. more popular PSOne titles are expected to continue to launch regularly for the phone post-launch.

Be sure to watch this space for more info on the Xperia Play as we get it and don't forget to sound off in the comments below!

In honesty I can't see this getting very far. Phones are progressing pretty quick at the moment, dual core phones will start to roll out before mid this year. Without the Playstation store on there til the end of the year it's effectively an android device with a slide out game-pad. But the main issue you have then is it's the only device on the market with this pad meaning the amount of android app devs creating software that will even support it is likely to be pretty low.

Legendary PSOne game I'm gambling on MGS!

Yeah i've seen pics on the web of it running MGS, whether they're simply mock-ups or real i'm not sure. As we talked about Chaz I was considering it since i'm not exactly a 'hardcore portable' gamer and prefer to do my hardcore gaming on home consoles.

On top of that, I need a new phone and am pretty set on getting a smartphone but am not willing to shell out for an iPhone and all the crap that comes with it, it's just too much for someone like me and I don't need all the extras.

So, this looked like a nice alternative until this morning... Hearing about the 'No PS Store till end of year' really dampened my spirits and if that wasn't enough to completely turn me off it the 'Must re-purchase content' thing is, I mean that's a very questionable decision from Sony tbh...

I'll be re-considering a HTC I think.

@strite im in the same boat. im looking for a new phone and was slowly making my way towards this but to make my mind up ill have to have a fiddle with it in the shop. Also with the upcoming release of the nokia-xbox partnership on the horizon.

personnaly strite the HTC HD/desire are amazing phones im in love with it and with what ive played with. so thats a serious contender too.
